“A Light in the Darkness”
Touch Nature is a social enterprise that specialises in producing a diverse range of natural beauty and aromatherapy products, lovingly handmade by women who have committed themselves to leaving the flesh trade and starting afresh. We provide victims of human trafficking in Kolkata with the opportunity to leave the sex trade with confidence and engage in dignified labour. We train and equip our staff with the necessary skills to produce quality soap and aromatherapy products of natural goodness that is beneficial to both your wellbeing and the environment, and staff members also have the opportunity to receive training for managerial and administrative positions.
We strongly believe that all of us should answer the call to help the poor by teaching them to fish rather than simply giving them the fish. It ensures a sustainable future and allows them to provide for themselves with dignity and purpose.
Word Made Flesh co-ordinates training for women to prepare them to work in SutiSana. When a woman joins SutiSana, she receives all benefits, including health insurance. She and her children are supported through community, and she is given opportunities to continually grow – learning to design bags, work with new materials, and even coach other women as they leave prostitution.
From Nepal to India
Touch Nature was originally set up in Nepal in 2001, employing primarily single mothers as well as providing a crèche and childcare facility for their children. However, due to the political situation in Nepal and some unavoidable circumstances, we relocated to Kolkata, India.
With Kolkata housing one of Asia’s largest red light districts as well as being an active hub for the prostitution of Nepalese women, we decided that our skills and experiences could best be put to use by helping Kolkata’s trafficked women. Hence, in 2012, Touch Nature India was born.
